$ORCL's Investor Day: our four-question backlog scorecard
Our read: Oracle's Investor Day was about money, not about who owns its backlog.
On our scorecard of four backlog questions, $ORCL answered 0: two partial, two not given.
Backlog (RPO) is revenue customers have signed for that hasn't been booked yet.
- A new backlog figure: not given. The slides repeat $664B as of Aug. 31. They say Oracle added $30B+ that quarter, and about 90% of the backlog is cloud infrastructure.
- Which customers: partial. Slides say customer mix broadened in each of the last four quarters, with no numbers.
- The OpenAI contract: not given. No value or term. Oracle's own Oct. 27 release says OpenAI trains and serves its models on Oracle's cloud in Abilene.
- Named non-AI-lab customers with dollar amounts: partial. Oracle's Oct. 27 release names ADT as expanding its use of Oracle's AI apps, with no contract value.
What it did give: a $225B+ revenue target for fiscal 2030 and a date for positive free cash flow.
What would prove us wrong
Set before publication. We report back in public when one trips.
- Oracle's filing for the quarter ending Nov. 30 shows the AI labs' deals are smaller than reported, so that labs' named deals fall below about $751B, 40% of the rise in combined backlog since mid-2024. Open · Next check: $ORCL filing for the quarter ending Nov. 30
